In The Matriarchs, narrative construction, gesture, and mythology are combined to draw connections between the vanishing landscape of South Florida, women in family units, and generational memory. The group portraits emphasize physical postures of connectivity, hierarchy, balance, and tension--all allusions to the dynamics that exist within filial relationships. In the still-life photographs, flora native to the subtropics are combined with fragments of the femme body. These images are influenced by 17th century memento mori paintings; a reminder of life’s vanities and the fragility of human experience against a disappearing terrain.
