Sea Pastures, 2016-19
Site-specific video installation derived from paper collages.
Commissioned by the New Orleans Film Society for the New Orleans Film Festival, 2019.
Sea Pastures, is a video portrait of my brother Jeremy Molina, a precocious young man who practices the martial art of Kung Fu. As we conversed on Miami Beach one afternoon, I was taken by the sensitivity, regard, and discipline he had for his craft. The way he spoke of his body engaging in sacred movements surprised me in its defiance of masculine stereotypes. In this work, I filmed Jeremy performing basic movements while the tides roll in and out of the shore. The synchronicity of wave and gesture give the impression that he is controlling the currents of the sea.
