Crystal Radio, 2012-16
Interactive installation with custom denta-mandibular sound transmitting lollipops, and miniature video projections, inside of mirrored hexagonal sculptures.
Crystal Radio is an interactive audio-video installation that transmits sounds directly into participant's heads. Upon entering the gallery space viewers can see a constellation of miniature projections housed inside of mirrored orbs. The audio portion of the work however, can only be heard if a viewer agrees to eat an organically grown crystalline lollipop. When a viewer introduces the lollipop into the mouth and bites down they hear an intimate secret soundscape resonating inside their own heads. Taking inspiration from the simple radio set, this "Crystal Radio" offers an exclusive monologue from the character depicted in the videos to the audience member. The figure in this work is loosely inspired by "the lover" in Roland Barthes book "A Lover's Discourse" who describes intense scenarios of unrequited love. In Crystal Radio the audience becomes a stand-in for the elusive lover's "beloved subject "and becomes captive in a fantasy of imagined crystalline landscapes and shadowy declarations.
