River River, 2018
River River, a performative video with artist Leah Floyd, was made in New Orleans throughout various locations along the Mississippi River. In the video, the two artists are seen performing a flag routine among sites that are meant to control or overlook water. Such sites include levees, bridges, and aboard the infamous Natchez steamboat—a boat tour that introduces its voyage with a calliope set, and sails down the Mississippi for a couple of hours passing scenic architecture, blighted properties, and oil refineries. With a flag routine guided by the shrill and cheery harmony of the calliope, and the backdrop of the present day petrochemical Mississippi river, tensions between the festive carnival culture of New Orleans come into contrast with environmental concerns facing Louisiana’s landscape.
